Should I Become A Personal Trainer: Ranking The Benefits of Being A Health Coach

Should I Become A Personal Trainer? – Ranking The Benefits of Being A Health Coach

Being a personal trainer is a fulfilling job, with excellent work-life balance and reasonable financial potential, once you consider its stability.

by Leon Bassey – 5 minute read

In the past 5 years, the google search for “personal coaching” has increased by 50%, showing that the demand for personal trainers is rising at a fast rate, and the greater the demand, the greater the need for supply. That’s why PT Academy gets over 200 sign-ups per month.

Here are the main benefits to keep in mind if you are thinking about becoming a personal trainer.

    1. Job Satisfaction & Social Impact

If you are truly passionate about fitness and love all things gym, nutrition, training, and movement-related, then becoming a personal trainer will be the perfect career path for you.

A 2016 study found that people with consistently low job satisfaction in their 20s and 30s reported more depression, sleep problems, and excessive worry by age 40.

Many personal trainers rate their careers highly because they get to directly help people improve their health, confidence and lifestyle. If you like fitness and motivating others, it is one of the highest-ranking roles for job satisfaction. Not only do you get to help people, you get to see the impact of your work in real time as your clients achieve their goals! A big plus if you prefer tangible benefits and real-world outcomes.

    2. Flexibility / Work-Life Balance

    2. Flexibility / Work-Life Balance

Here at PT Academy, we believe everyone deserves a good work-life balance, and becoming a personal trainer provides exactly that.

Offline trainers have the flexibility to pick their own working hours. However, they are limited by gym opening and closing times, commuting, and clients’ schedules. Early mornings and evenings are more common work times for an offline personal trainer.

Online trainers (coaching, zoom, social media content) can work from anywhere and can scale more easily as they have the wider reach of being on the internet, giving them a better chance at passive or semi-passive income.

Overall, compared to a traditional, rigid 9-5 job, being a personal trainer is much more freeing, but always remember, you will be trading consistency of hours for flexibility.

    3. Security & Stability

    3. Security & Stability

As you now know, you will have a flexible work schedule as a personal trainer, but this flexible schedule also means you will not have consistent work hours, especially when you are starting out.

Being a personal trainer is heavily dependent on client retention, reputation, and sometimes gym contracts, and an economic downturn can often make people cut “luxury” spending like personal training sessions from their budgets, leaving you with one less client and one less source of income.

The only workaround for this is to also have a digital product, this has been proven to help fitness professionals maintain another source of passive income as they continue to build their client list.

    4. Financial Potential

    4. Financial Potential

The average salary of a personal trainer in the UK varies by platform and experience. In many areas across the UK, an experienced offline personal trainer can charge between £35-£60/ph, and can easily go up to anywhere from £60-£80+ in bigger cities such as London. Newly qualified personal trainers usually start off charging £20/ph and move up to £40/ph as their experience increases.

Online personal trainers, on the other hand, can charge anywhere from £15-£50/ph for each session, or range from £50-200 for a monthly subscription, depending on what’s included, i.e frequency of check-ins, bespoke programming, providing nutrition guidance, etc.

Either way, whichever path you choose, if you build a strong brand, try to get into both offline and online coaching, or package your knowledge into a course and push it on social media, the earning potential increases massively. The top percentile of online trainers, especially those with good marketing, can earn up to six figures annually.

How do I become a personal trainer?

After considering passion, pay, security, and flexibility, personal training would rank highly on a list of jobs people love to do.

If you love fitness and are truly self-motivated to accomplish great things, then becoming a personal trainer will be the best decision you ever make.

PT Academy can provide you with unmatched courses, ranging from all levels, that can give you the tools you need to succeed. For more information, click here.

  • How To Get Personal Trainer Clients From Facebook

Facebook is still the largest social media network in the world with more than 2.8 billion monthly active users. Within that large audience are some new clients just waiting for their new PT. In this blog you will understand how you can build your personal training business on social media as well as making Facebook work for you.

    The importance of Facebook

While newer platforms like TikTok and Instagram get a lot of attention, Facebook remains the backbone of online communities. Anything from the best wedding venue locations to outdoor fitness groups, Facebook as it all. With local groups reaching thousands of active users, it would be hard to pass up on the overall reach. Its ability to connect people through groups, events and messenger makes it one of the most powerful platforms out their today.

Joining The Right Facebook Groups & Communities

One of the fastest ways to start building your presence is by joining fitness focused groups and communities. Your new clients could already be there and you just need to reach out. The list of groups is endless, if you wanted to find something local to reach out to new clients or something wider, you can. Local groups such as health and wellness or even hobby specific groups like running or cycling clubs can be the ideal starting point.

Create Your Own Facebook Groups & Events

Starting your own Facebook group is of the most powerful long term strategies. This gives you a space to share training advice and content with your following. It also opens up the doors for your followers to start interacting with each other, which in return builds a strong community around your brand.

You can also use this space to build challenges for your audience. Setting group goals and challenges will help your clients engage more with your posts. You can also use Facebook Events to promote classes, workshops or free webinars. This positions you as a leader in your niche while giving potential clients a taste of your training style.

Keep an Eye On Facebook Messenger

Many potential clients will reach out through Facebook Messenger, especially if they’ve seen your content or group posts before. Similar to Instagram DMs this can be a great way to ask the right questions to these new clients as well as for them to understand what you offer as a personal trainer. Be responsive and approachable. Messenger can also be used to follow up with any leads, send reminders about upcoming events or even just to deliver quick coaching tips. A handle tool on Facebook that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Keep Track on How Clients Are Finding You

It’s important to know what’s working. When a new client signs up, it’s always best practise to ask how they discovered you. If they’re finding you through social media, word of mouth or other forms of marketing, knowing the source of these clients means you can capitalise on what works. It could’ve even been through a piece of content you shared, meaning that that style of content is clearly reaching the right audience.

Make Sure Your Sharing Your Content Across All Social Media Platforms

Don’t let your Facebook content stay only on Facebook. Repurposing your content on Instagram and TikTok for example can lift any audience limitations you might have. If you wanted to learn more we have a blog on: How to Build an Instagram Page as a Personal Trainer or if you wanted to learn more on: How to Build a TikTok Page as a Personal Trainer.

When you’re sharing things across different platforms it’s important to be aware of how to market them. For example:

    • A Facebook live Q&A can become a TikTok highlight reel
    • A motivational Facebook post can be reshared on Instagram
    • Your group discussions can inspire full length blog posts

By distributing your content across platforms, you can maximise visibility and reach different audiences who may not be active on Facebook.

    Where To Start?

Facebook isn’t just a place to post, it’s a place to build relationships, grow communities and attract long term personal training clients. By joining the right groups, creating your own community, staying active on Messenger and tracking clients sources, you’ll be well on your way to building a sustainable and thriving fitness business.

At PT Academy, we’re here to support you every step of the way as you grow your personal training career. Book a free consultation today.

  • I Am Looking For A Job – What Are My Career Options

I Am Looking For A Job – What Are My Career Options

With the Birmingham Careers Fair quickly approaching, let’s discuss the best ways to find a job in 2025.

What Is The Best Way To Find A Job in 2025?

Finding a job can be relatively easy if you know where to look: job boards, internships, recruitment agencies, and career fairs will always be your safest bets.

Job Boards – A job board is a sure-fire way to see what jobs are available in your area. With a list of roles, you can filter by location, job title, desired pay, and job type to find what best suits you.

Internships – Finding the right internship can really fast-track your career in any field. You get to be on site, gaining real-world experience, and some even get paid!

Recruitment Agencies – The easiest way to get a job with minimal effort, is to register with a recruitment agency. All you have to do is sign up to any agency with your details (the more the merrier), and voila! The more you sign up for, the higher the chance you have of landing a job. The roles they give you are usually temporary, a few shifts here and there, across scattered locations, with consistent gigs depending on demand.

One more caveat is that… it is very competitive. Some recruitment agencies apply a first-come, first-served basis, where you are responsible for keeping your notifications on, waiting for the ding, and being one of the first to express interest in the available role. Picture Hunger Games, but much less gruesome.

Career Fairs – If you are located in Birmingham, there is a career fair on Friday 26th September, with 100’s of fantastic jobs available on the day. It will be held at the Leonardo Royal Hotel from 10AM to 2PM. If you want to find out more, visit Birmingham Careers Fair. Similarly, there are career fairs happening year-round in most locations. If you search up the area you live in + career fairs, you should be able to find one in your city or close by. Another way to find out which career fairs are happening in your city is by visiting your local Jobcentre and making an enquiry.

The Course to Interview Pipeline – Services like PT Academy offer courses and provide valuable training that will help you get certified in the field you want (in this case, being a personal trainer). This is followed by support with job applications and, in some cases, guaranteed job interviews with established partners.

  • Personal Trainer Marketing & How To Turn It Into Sales

Personal Trainer Marketing & How To Turn It Into Sales

In today’s fitness industry, being a skilled personal trainer is only part of the equation. To build a successful business within the fitness industry as a PT you have to stand out. You also need to know how to market yourself effectively and convert interest into paying clients. With the right marketing strategies, personal trainers can stand out in a competitive market and build the trust with potential clients.

Why Marketing Matters for Personal Trainers

Marketing is about more than just getting your name out there, it’s about communicating your value. Clients don’t just buy workouts they buy the solutions to their problems. Whether that’s weight loss, strength building or accountability, the effective marketing positions you as the go-to expert who can deliver results.

Without a clear strategy in place, even the best trainers risk blending into the crowd. With the right approach to your marketing plan however, you can generate leads and create a strong client relationship. Being a great PT is all about knowing the relevant knowledge and sharing that with your clients. If you’re in need of certified personal trainer courses, PT Academy has a wide range of qualifications that will suite what you’re after.

Key Marketing Strategies to Boost Sales

Instead of applying to everyone, focusing on your niche and target audience can further the correct clients. Define your niche. Do you specialise in weight loss, running clubs, pool workouts or lifestyle coaching? Whatever your niche is, show that off on your socials and branding. If you’re highlighting your strengths within that niche people are more likely to trust you for future programmes.

    Building a Strong Online Presence

Your online platforms are often the first impression potential clients get and this could even be a quick glance. Keeping your social media, website and profiles professional and consistent will be a strong indicator on your professionalism as well as offering.

A few things you can show off on these platforms are:

    • Client transformations and testimonials
    • Quick workout tips & tricks
    • Nutritional advice
    • Behind the scenes and insights into your training style and personal life

Remember platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are the easiest ways for clients to quickly see what you’re all about. If you want to further your online presence on Instagram check out our blog post on How to Build an Instagram Page as a Personal Trainer or if you’re after an online presence on TikTok check out our blog post on How to Build a TikTok Page as a Personal Trainer.

Social Proof & Free Value Will Build Trust

People trust people. If you’re sharing reviews, clear before and after photos and video testimonials from real clients, this helps build credibility to your PT business. Ultimately the proof will be in the pudding. Show off all of the hard work you’re doing as a personal trainer and don’t be afraid to do it.

Consider running a free webinar, a downloadable fitness guide or a 7-day challenge for your clients to get involved in. This is a great way to showoff what you can do as a PT and really give a taste of the offerings you have. By giving value upfront, you demonstrate expertise and start building a relationship before asking for the sale.

Consider Custom Price Packages For Your Clients

Every client is different and will have different needs to what you offer in some of your packaged pricing. This is not to say you should sell your self short but to custom your offerings for new clients who need it.

You may have someone who is keen to get on a hypertrophy training plan but also wants to explore their options with a running club. These might be two different offerings on your website but this isn’t to say you couldn’t arrange a custom package for them. This is why it’s always good practice to both understand what your clients want and share everything you offer online.

Driving Sales As a Personal Trainer

Marketing generates attention, but sales close the deal.To convert leads into paying clients you should:

    • Listen before selling and fully understand their gaols and challenges
    • Present tailored solutions whilst connecting your services directly to their needs
    • Be confident in your pricing as clients will pay for results not just sessions, if you can get them their know your worth

The best sales conversations don’t feel like selling, they feel like problem solving. You want to answer the questions that your clients have with a clear understanding on how to get there.

  • Which Brands Can I Partner With As A PT?

Which Brands Can I Partner With As A PT?

Brand partnerships are no longer reserved for elite athletes or influencers with millions of followers. Today, personal trainers are increasingly collaborating with fitness, wellness, and lifestyle brands – not just for extra income, but to add value to their service, build credibility, and expand their professional footprint. If you are reading this article, you are one step closer to elevating yourself as a fitness professional.

The key is understanding which brands make sense to partner with, and how those partnerships should actually work in practice.

Why Brands Partner With Personal Trainers

From a brand’s perspective, personal trainers sit in a position of trust. Clients listen to what their trainer recommends, whether that’s a protein powder, a pair of trainers, or a recovery tool. Unlike traditional influencers, PTs work directly with people who are actively trying to improve their health, and over the course of working towards that goal, trainers have accumulated large amounts of trust that is valuable to any company trying to sell..

For trainers, the benefit goes beyond free products or commission. A well-aligned partnership can:

    • Strengthen personal brand credibility
    • Improve the client experience
    • Create additional income streams
    • Open doors to long-term professional opportunities

That said, the wrong partnerships can damage trust just as quickly as the right ones can build it, so be cautious when making your decision.

Option 1: Supplement and Nutrition Brands

Option 1: Supplement and Nutrition Brands

Supplement companies are among the most common partners for personal trainers, particularly those focused on protein, creatine, electrolytes, and functional nutrition.

Well-established brands often look for trainers who can educate clients rather than simply promote products. This might involve discount codes, affiliate links, or educational content rather than hard selling.

The critical point here is alignment. Recommending supplements that are poorly formulated or unnecessary for your client base can undermine trust. Trainers who partner selectively – and only with products they would recommend regardless of payment – tend to see better long-term results.

Option 2: Fitness Apparel and Footwear Brands

Option 2: Fitness Apparel and Footwear Brands

Clothing and footwear brands frequently collaborate with trainers who have a visible presence in gyms, studios, or online. These partnerships may start informally, such as gifted apparel, before evolving into ambassador roles or paid campaigns.

For many PTs, apparel partnerships work well because they are:

    • Highly visible during sessions
    • Easy to integrate naturally into content
    • Relevant to nearly all clients

However, reach is not the only factor brands consider. Consistency, professionalism, and how you represent yourself in real-world settings matter just as much as follower count.

Option 3: Equipment and Recovery Brands

Option 3: Equipment and Recovery Brands

Brands selling resistance bands, adjustable dumbbells, massage guns, mobility tools, and recovery aids are increasingly partnering with trainers who can demonstrate real-world use.

This category is particularly valuable because it ties directly into client outcomes. A trainer who introduces recovery tools or home training equipment through a brand partnership can improve client adherence and results, while also generating additional income.

These partnerships often work best when the trainer uses the equipment regularly with clients, rather than positioning it as an optional add-on.

Option 4: Fitness Apps and Digital Platforms

Option 4: Fitness Apps and Digital Platforms

As hybrid and online training continues to grow, fitness apps and digital platforms are actively seeking personal trainers to help promote, test, or co-create content.

    These partnerships may involve:

    • Referral schemes
    • Content collaboration
    • Early access to features
    • Revenue sharing

For trainers building online programmes or remote coaching services, these partnerships can be particularly powerful, as they scale far beyond in-person sessions.

Option 5: Wellness and Lifestyle Brands

Option 5: Wellness and Lifestyle Brands

Sleep, hydration, mental wellbeing, and recovery-focused brands are increasingly entering the fitness space. From wearable technology to mindfulness apps, these partnerships reflect the broader shift towards holistic health.

Trainers who already discuss lifestyle habits with clients are well positioned here, but credibility is essential. Partnering with wellness brands requires clear boundaries, evidence-based recommendations, and transparency.

What Brands Actually Look For in a Personal Trainer

Contrary to popular belief, most brands are not simply chasing follower numbers. They are looking for trainers who:

    • Communicate clearly and professionally
    • Understand their audience
    • Show potential in representing their brand responsibly
    • Can explain why a product is useful

A trainer with a smaller but engaged audience – or a strong in-gym presence – can often be more attractive than a large but disengaged social following.

    A Word of Caution

Not every partnership is worth accepting. Over-promotion, conflicting brand deals, or partnerships that do not align with your values can erode trust quickly.

Clients can tell when a recommendation is genuine and when it is transactional. Long-term success comes from treating brand partnerships as an extension of your coaching philosophy, not a shortcut to quick income.

Final Thoughts – Staying On Brand

Brand partnerships can be a powerful tool for personal trainers, but only when approached strategically. The strongest partnerships enhance the client experience, reinforce professional credibility, and support sustainable career growth.

For those looking to build a long-term career in fitness, understanding how to navigate brand collaborations is becoming just as important as programming, coaching, and communication skills.

If you are serious about developing a professional, future-proof career as a personal trainer, PT Academy provides the education, credibility, and industry insight needed to stand out – not just to clients, but to brands looking for trainers they can trust.

  • How to Become A Sponsored Athlete Step By Step Guide

For many athletes, securing a sponsorship is a dream milestone. Not only does it provide financial support and recourses but it will also validate your dedication to your sport. Whether you’re new to the business or been a personal trainer for years, understanding how to become a sponsored athlete requires strategy, preparation and persistence. This sponsored athlete guide will walk you through the essentials to get you started on the journey to becoming a great sponsored athlete.

    Define Your Performance Goals

Before brands even consider you to get onboard, you must have clear performance and goals you’re working towards. Keeping a log and tracking your dedication will ensure you’re serious about your craft and help make you visible to some sponsors. Whether you focus on improving through a structured training programme, competing at higher levels or even developing a strong online presence, setting clear goals to work towards

    Building Your Personal Brand

Sponsorship is more than athletic ability, it’s about influence. A strong personal brand can not only make you stand out from the crowd but can also allow you to build a brand community. Making things personal allows your audience to trust and relate to your content.

A lot of fitness influencers tend to show a day in the life style of content, which really breaks down the barrier of just another fitness influencer. Take Christian Guzman for example. Someone who started out just filming his workouts for fun but later started tracking his process through the use of daily vlogs on YouTube. He picked up sponsorship deals from some of the biggest names in the industry such as Gymshark & Ghost before later starting his own competitor to Gymshark called Alphalete.

There is no limitation of where to put your content. If you push your content out on Facebook Groups, Instagram, TikTok or even website blogs, let your personality shine.

A few things to consider when building your personal brand:

    • Share your journey on social media
    • Highlight your fitness career progress
    • Align your content with your values and the brands you hope to partner with

Something to always be considerate of is brand partnerships thrive when both sides share common goals and audience interests.

    Showcase Your Performance and Training

Brands invest in athletes who demonstrate discipline, consistency and results. Document your training and performance for sponsorship by sharing workouts and achievements. Showing off what you’re good at and what you’ve achieved in your fitness niche will help highlight your passion towards certain partnerships. This will not only attract sponsorship opportunities but will also show you’re committed to long-term growth.

    Prepare a Sponsorship Proposal

Whether you’re just starting out or have been trying to find sponsorship for awhile, it should always be in the back of your mind what you’re looking for from sponsors. Every athlete should have a professional sponsorship package ready to go. A great sports sponsorship application guide includes:

    • Your athletic resume and achievements
    • Social media reach and engagement
    • Details of your audience demographics
    • Clear explanation of how you can add vaule to the brand

Think of this as your athlete sponsorship preparation checklist, brands want to use professionalism and a have a clear plan.

    Approach The Right Brands

The sponsorship has to be right for you at the end of the day. Although it can be frustrating if you’re not hearing back from the companies at the top of your list right away, you should always consider if it’s right for you first. Don’t send generic requests. Take some time to research the right companies that share your goals and values.

Companies that aline with your sport, lifestyle and values are going to play a key part in retaining these sponsorships. A high-impact athlete sponsorship plan targets brands that would genuinely benefit from partnering with you.

    Deliver Ongoing Value

Securing sponsorships is just the beginning. Getting a retainer with the sponsors can be just as important as being sponsored. To maintain brand partnerships for athletes you need to:

    • Represent the brand with professionalism. This doesn’t just the content you’re putting out specially for that brand but ensuring you’re not posting controversial content that doesn’t align with their company values.
    • Consistently share their products or services. Something that can help drive more traffic to their page or build brand awareness, will help justify your sponsorship.
    • Provide measurable results. Trackable links, sales, brand awareness and engagement are just a few ways in which you can do this.

This is where sponsored athlete success strategies come into play. Sustaining that value will ensure long-term relationships.

    Where Do I Start?

Learning how to become a sponsored athlete takes time, effort and strategy. By following this step-by-step athlete sponsorship guide, you’ll put yourself in the best position to secure meaningful partnerships that support your fitness career and athletic journey.

  • Best Online Services to Use as an Online Personal Trainer

Best Online Services to Use as an Online Personal Trainer

The shift to online training isn’t a fad – it’s a permanent evolution in how personal trainers reach clients, deliver programmes, and scale their businesses. Choosing the right digital services can transform your efficiency, client experience, and earning potential.

This guide explores the best online tools and platforms that help personal trainers succeed in the digital space – from coaching delivery to payment processing, scheduling, marketing and community building.

Are Online Services Important for PTs

If you are wondering “Are online services good for personal trainers?” or “Do online services benefit personal trainers?” The answer is YES! Being an online personal trainer gives you freedom – and complexity.

Without the right systems, you might struggle with:

    • Scheduling sessions
    • Delivering workouts and coaching
    • Tracking client progress
    • Managing payments and communication
    • Marketing your services consistently

The right platforms do more than automate tasks – they enhance trust, value and client satisfaction. Here is a list of the most essential ones.

    1. Coaching & Programme Delivery Platforms

Trainerize (or Similar PT Coaching Software)

    • Client dashboard with progress tracking
    • Custom workouts and templates
    • Habit and nutrition tracking integrations
    • White-label options for branding

Who it’s best for: Coaches who want an all-in-one platform to deliver structured programmes and keep clients engaged.

    Best features:

    • Easy client assignment

    Google Meet

Why it’s useful: Often free and easily accessible with Google accounts, ideal for shorter consultations or onboarding calls.

Best for: Trainers who want cost-effective live coaching without advanced features.

  • 7 Benefits of Using Pools In Personal Training Helping Clients Return To Fitness

Aquatic training has long been used in rehabilitation and therapy but more personal trainers are discovering how effective water-based workouts can be fore helping clients ease back into fitness. By offering water workouts you are opening up the door for new clients as well as doing more than most PTs out there.

1 Low Impact, Joint Friendly Training

Something that our clients may face from time to time is a discomfort in their joints or even a fear of pain. Running, jumping or walking on hard surfaces can put stress on your joints, tendons and muscles. Water however, can provide natural buoyancy that reduces the body weight by up to 90%, which in return significantly lowers the impact on your joints.

Our clients may need that extra support in dealing with the strains that come with these inner injuries. Pool training can be the ideal solution for your clients in slowly getting them back onto their fitness journey. Whilst they may want to stay active, their body could have other plans.

2 Resistance In Every Direction & Offers a Fully Body Workout

If your client doesn’t like the idea of splitting their workouts into different body groups swimming can be the answer you’ve been looking for. This can also be a great suggestion for a client how has to stick to a tight schedule, working out in the pool could be the ideal alternative.

Unlike gym equipment, which typically works muscles in one plane of motion, water workouts will provide a full 360 resistance. Every push, pull and step challenges muscles in multiple directors, making aquatic training an efficient way to build strength and stability.

This isn’t to say you can’t train specify body types and highlight body workouts. You can tailor this to each one of your clients and their needs, if they wanted to train a certain body type they still can.

3 Aquatic Training Reduces The Risk of Any Injuries For Your Clients

One of the biggest barriers for clients can be returning back to fitness after having an injury. Water reduces the load on bones and muscles, which makes it a safer space for clients to test movements they might otherwise avoid. For older adults, beginners or those with a history of injuries, aquatic training provides peace of mind while still offering an effective workout. If you’d like to learn more about aquatic training and how to get your personal training skills to the next level be sure to explore our range of qualified courses on PT Academy.

4 Cardiovascular Fitness Without The Strain

Cardio can sometimes be daunting for clients who dislike running or high impact classes. Whether through swimming laps, water jogging or circuits, pool based cardio gives clients a chance to elevate their heart rate while minimising physical stress. This makes it ideal for building endurance and lung capacity without the heavy toll on your body.

5 Faster Recovery & Rehabilitation Support

Pools have long been used in physiotherapy and rehab because of how well they support recovery. The hydrostatic pressure of water helps reduce swelling, improve circulation and supports healing. For clients transitioning out of physiotherapy and into regular training, aquatic workouts can be a safe and effective bridge.

Another great resource for recovery would be cold plunging. Researchers have proven that having a cold plunge at just 13°c can increase your dopamine (often referred to as the happy hormone) levels by 250%. Naturally increasing your dopamine levels can be linked to overall feeling better, more motivated and hyper focused. If you wanted to learn more about this check out our blog on The Benefits of Daily Cold Plunging

    6 No Equipment Needed

One of the best things about water workouts is their simplicity. With just a pool, clients can perform resistance, cardio, flexibility and balance training all without needing any bulky equipment. For trainers, this means reduced setup time and increased versatility when working with different clients. It’s also a lot cheaper than having all of the equipment in house and worrying if you don’t have the right weights or worse they’re already in use.

7 Stress Relief & Mental Health Benefits

Finally we can’t ignore the mental side of fitness. Water has a naturally calming effect, helping clients reduce stress and improve their overall mood. Aquatic exercise has been shown to lower cortisol levels and boost endorphins, which makes it a great tool not only for physical rehabilitation but also supporting your overall mental well-being.

Mental health should not be overlooked in the fitness world and some of your clients might be struggling with their own battles. It’s always important to check in on each of your clients and offer the best results that will aid towards a better state of mind.

Why Trainers Should Add Aquatic Training to Their Toolkit

By offering pool based training, you’re expanding your skill set, creating unique opportunities for clients and positioning yourself as a well rounded professional. Not only will this attract new clients but it also allows you to better serve those struggling with injuries, pains or mental barriers to exercise.

If you’re ready to grow as a personal trainer and gain expertise in areas like aquatic training, rehabilitation and advance fitness techniques, PT Academy can help you take the right steps towards. Start your journey today.

  • How to Improve Your Swimming Workouts to Help Your Clients

How to Improve Your Swimming Workouts to Help Your Clients

Swimming is one of the most complete, low-impact and effective full body workouts on the planet. Whether your clients want to build endurance, develop strength, enhance recovery or simply diversity their training routine, swimming provides unmatched benefits that land based training often can’t replicate.

But as a fitness professional, knowing how to optimise swimming sessions is what sets you apart from the rest. Understanding stroke mechanics, energy systems and proper progression helps your clients move efficiently, prevent injuries and ultimately achieve better results in and out of the pool. Here’s how to help your client improve their swimming workouts, from technique to conditioning and how upskilling with PT Academy can make you the kind of coach who brings real leading changes.

Why Swimming Deserves a Place In Every Fitness Programme

Swimming challenges the body in ways most exercises can’t. It builds endurance, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and flexibility. All while being gentle on the joints and ideal for any recovery training. A popular benefit is the low impact resistance that it puts on your body. Perfect for clients recovering from injuries or looking for cross-training options.

Another benefit with swimming is how it isn’t restricted to just one part of your body and how you can get a great full body workout in. Every stroke recruits multiple muscle groups such as lats and shoulders to core and glutes. With that being said it also helps improve your mobility and posture. The elongated body position and consistent training promotes better alignment. Swimming can be tailored for endurance, power or interval conditioning.

For trainers, understanding how to programme swimming effectively adds a new layer of versatility to your coaching toolkit. You can really stretch out your wide range of skills to your clients with the more sports and offerings you have. This also might encourage clients to stay with you and learn more about new training workouts such as swimming if they’re coming from a HIIT programme.

Why Swimming Deserves a Place In Every Fitness Program

    Focus on Technique First

Before thinking about distance or speed, form is everything. Poor technique not only wastes energy but can also increase the risk of overuse injuries in the shoulders, neck and lower back. If you’re looking for stretching exercise outside of the pool to improve your lower back, then check out or blog post on The Best Stretches to Relieve Back Pain and Improve Mobility

Encourage your clients to work on body alignment. The head, hips and feet should form a straight line near the surface of the water. It is also vital to have effective breathing. Instructing rhythmic, bilateral breathing to maintain balance and prevent tension in the neck and shoulders is important. Your client could be new to this style of training and might not fully understand the technique/ form so ensure that you’re clear with how to swim.

Another great thing to consider is kick mechanics. Small, fast and controlled kicks from your hips, not knees, are more effective and less fatiguing. Technique drills, like fingertip drags, catch-up drills and single arm strokes, help clients build awareness and control before increasing volume or intensity.

    Focus on Technique First

    Introduce Structured Swim Workouts

Many people swim laps without purpose, moving back and forth without a clear plan. As a trainer, help your clients apply the same structured approach they use in strength or cardio sessions to their swimming workouts. This will help them understand the structure more and fully get in the flow if they’re used to a similar format to what they’re already doing.

A great example of this would be getting your clients to warm up doing light laps or slow swims for 5-10 minutes and then have a main set for 20-30 minutes. Start with easy laps, mobility exercises or dynamic stretches to prepare muscles and joints. Include drills like sculling or kicking with a board to activate the shoulders and core.

Tailor this to your clients goal and ensure they’re getting the best most fitted workout for their needs.

Endurance: Continuous swims or longer intervals for example 4×200 m with 30 seconds rest.

Speed and Power: Shorter, faster efforts having 8 x 50 m sprints with 20 seconds of rest.

Technique and Form: Include focused drills between moderate laps.

Following that, having a cool down of 5-10 minutes to unwind the intensity of the workout can be beneficial for your clients. Easy swimming, backstrokes or floating movements to promote recovery and regulate breathing. Encourage your clients to track time, distance and perceived effort, just like they would with gym training or other means of workouts.

    Introduce Structured Swim Workouts

    Use Cross-Training to Enhance Performance

A well-designed gym routine can drastically improve a swimmer’s efficiency in the water. Focus on strengthening the key muscles used in swimming such as the upper body, core and lower body.

Lat pulldowns, pull-ups and rotator cuffs exercise are great examples of upper body exercises to start doing to help improve your overall swimming ability. In terms of Core exercises you should be showing your client such exercises like the plank, russian twists and stability ball rollouts for balance and rotation control. And finally some great exercises for the lower body are squats, hip bridges and calf raises for propulsion and kick efficiency. By getting your client to train these types of exercise you will aid their overall swimming ability and get them from beginner to pro level in no time.

Flexibility and mobility work is especially essential for the shoulders, spine and hips that should also be part of every swimmer’s programme. By considering land-based and water based training, you can help clients build strength that translates directly to swimming performance.

    Use Cross-Training to Enhance Performance

Programme with Purpose: Energy Systems and Intervals

Swimming can be tailored to target specific energy systems just like running or cycling.

    • Aerobic Training: Long, steady swims improve endurance and cardiovascular efficiency
    • Anabolic Training: High intensity interval training (HIIT) enhances power output and speed.
    • Lactate Threshold Work: Repeated moderate hard intervals build sustainable pace and efficiency.

Educate clients about pacing, too many swimmers go all out early and fade quickly. It’s important to remind your clients that it will come with time and they won’t be skilled swimmers straight off the bat. Like anything in the world of fitness, consistency is key and ensuring that your clients aren’t burning out when they first start their swimming programme is vital. Controlled, structured sessions teach body awareness and improve performance over time.

    Breathing and Recovery

    Breathing and Recovery

Breathing patterns are central to swimming performance and recovery. Encourage rhythmic breathing, ideally every 3 strokes for front crawl to maintain oxygen levels and reduce fatigue.

After intense sets, include active recovery (easy laps or backstrokes) and mobility work to prevent stiffness. Emphasises hydration as many swimmers forget they’re sweating in the pool and it can be easy to overlook drinking water when you’re surrounded by it.

    Breathing and Recovery

    Motivate With Progress Tracking

Tracking is key for keeping clients engaged and you should be considering tracking their total distance per session, average pace per 100m, stroke count and efficiency and the rest time between intervals. These are all great measurable things to track for each session with your client as you can start to notice their improvements as well as what they need to be working on. Reducing stroke counts or increasing distance builds confidence and momentum.

    Motivate With Progress Tracking

Why Personal Trainers Should Learn to Coach Swimming

Swimming is an unstoppable opportunity for many trainers. By understanding how to design effective pool workouts, you can expand your client base, differentiate yourself and provide a low impact alternative for those with joint issues or injuries.

Knowledge of aquatic exercises also complement rehabilitation and conditioning programmes, valuable for trainers working with athletes, seniors or clients in post rehab phases. If you’re looking to upskill your knowledge with pool work or simply have a passion for fitness and want to learn the best qualifications out there that suit your style, then PT Academy is the right place for you.
