What questions should a personal trainer ask a client? That’s a good question.
Knowing where to start is tricky, especially since every client you have will be different. And most personal trainers will have an average of 15 to 25 clients.
But not knowing certain information from your clients could put your personal training career at risk. As the saying goes, rather be safe than sorry!
So, here is a list of questions that will uncover everything you should know about your clients:
1 – What are your fitness goals?
This is a no-brainer, but of course, you need to understand why your client has come to you in the first place.
Keep track of their goals by using a journal or notes on your phone. Alternatively, you could use one of the best fitness trackers in the UK. That way, you and the client can measure their progress as you embark on their fitness journey.
Every client’s goals will be different, which is why it’s so important to be aware of them.
2 – What is your medical history?
Pre-screening with a client is essential. This will help you understand what exercises you can and can’t do.
Performing exercises without knowledge of their medical history can put your client’s health and your career in danger.
Client screening gives insight into potential risk factors, no matter how big or small. Here is an excellent example of pre-exercise screening in action.
3 – What’s your daily nutrition?
Nutrition and exercise go hand in hand.
Getting to know about your clients’ diet can help identify possible changes or additions to reach their goals.
This is an awkward question, so make sure you ask carefully. As everyone’s idea of health is different, try to ask what their typical breakfast, lunch and dinner looks like in a day. Also, enquire about their water intake and if there are any snacks in between.
4 – What’s your weekly schedule like?
Your client’s weekly schedule will determine when you will have your training sessions.
By finding out their job, hobbies, social events and important commitments, you can figure out a schedule that will work for both of you.
5 – What workouts do you love?
It’s often a missed question, but personal trainers must know what their clients love doing. Listening to your client’s wants and needs is key to becoming a successful personal trainer.
Sure, most exercises could be more enjoyable. But if you tailor your personal training sessions to what your clients prefer or love to do, you’re likely to motivate them to attend each session.
Some questions you could ask:
What is your ideal length of a workout session?
Do you prefer cardio or weights?
Do you want to be indoors, outdoors or a bit of both?
